Petroleum & Water Officer Course (PWOC)

The 8A-SIR8, Petroleum & Water Officer Course (PWOC) Phase 1 & 2, and 8B-1390 (OS), Bulk Fuel Officer Course (USMC) is the senior petroleum and water management course offered in the Interservice Training Review Organization (ITRO). It provides the skills and knowledge to perform petroleum and water logistics management duties in both staff and supervisory operational assignments. Course duration is 8 weeks. The US Army officer upon successful completion of the course will acquire the designator “R8” (example: 90A92R8 etc.).

Prerequisites

All active components US Army Officers must be a graduate of LOG C3. US Army Reserve and National Guard Lieutenants must have completed the Quartermaster Basic Officer Leader Course (BOLC/BOLC-B) and must be assigned, or pending assignment, to a petroleum and /or water unit within the Reserve Component. RC Captains through Colonel must have completed a logistics Reserve Component Captains Career Course (LOG-C3).

Reporting/Administrative Support

Students who are attending the Petroleum & Water Officer Course (PWOC) must sign in to Headquarters and Headquarters Company (HHC) 23rd Quartermaster Brigade, 820 11th Street, Building 3102, phone number (804) 734-3833/6885 on your required report date during the duty day. (If reporting in on weekends then report to the 23rd BDE Staff Duty Desk located in BLDG. 3750).

All students will report on the first day of class at 0815 to the Advance Liquid Logistics and Energy Division, Petroleum, Water & Energy Department, Bldg. 11430B (Lab Bldg.), located at the corner of 40th St and Grant (G) Ave, Classroom 162.

Students attending the full 8 week course need to bring Pre-Execution Check list, three copies of travel orders and one copy each of DD Form 93, DD Form 1561, DD Form 1610 and the SGLI on the first day of class.

Special Requirements
Height and weight screening and body composition standards

All US Army students (AC-USAR-NG) will be required to be weighed (PT uniform required). IAW AR 350-1:3-13 d.

  • d. Height and weight screening and body composition standards.
  • (1) Policy for height and weight screening standards and body composition standards are contained in AR 600-9.
  • (2) Soldiers attending military schools and institutional training courses, in either a PCS or TDY status, which require preparation of a DA Form 1059 (Service School Academic Evaluation Report) will be administered height and weight screening as a mandatory course requirement.
  • (3) One re-screening is allowed. It will be administered no earlier than seven days and no later than 24 days after the initial failure to meet body composition standards (PWOC standard is 7 days).
  • (4) Soldiers who subsequently fail to meet the body composition standards of AR 600-9 will be removed from the course. The DA Form 1059 of Soldiers who fail to pass the ACFT and/or meet body fat composition standards will be annotated in block 11d “failed to Achieve Course Standards.” Soldiers who fail to achieve course standards are not eligible to enroll in any PME courses for 6 months after their dismissal.

Course Requirements

  • Classes and field trips, the uniform is ACU, CNT or NWU.
  • Weather-appropriate gear is recommended for outside training.
  • Students must bring a calculator with a square root function.
  • Students must have no history of dermatitis or allergic reactions traceable to the effects of petroleum products.
  • Pregnant soldiers cannot attend the course due to possible impact on the fetus.

NOTE: Students need to enroll into both Phases Ⅰ & Ⅱ training and have orders to cover both prior to arrival. Phase Ⅱ is scheduled to run concurrently with Phase Ⅰ.

NOTE: The US Marine Corps Phase Ⅱ is concurrent with the Petroleum and Water Officers Course (8A-SIR8) Phase Ⅱ.
